Position Overview

As a Same Day Surgery RN, you will use critical thinking, professional judgment, and leadership to plan, direct, and evaluate patient care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, and professional judgment to provide care for an assigned population.
  • Plans, provides, supervises, and documents professional nursing care in accordance with physician orders and established policies.
  • Communicates and collaborates with nurses, physicians, technicians, and other healthcare team members to develop a plan of care for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Charts observations and patient care activities in the electronic health record.
  • Provides safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care using advocacy and ethical approaches.
  • Guides and directs assigned unlicensed assistive personnel in delivering interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture or micro techniques for laboratory analysis.
  • Demonstrates awareness of organizational values, mission, and philosophy in all interactions.
  • Applies the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation) consistently.
  • Completes unit orientation and functions independently within established protocols and procedures.
  • Seeks appropriate resources in a timely fashion and demonstrates unit-specific competencies.
  • Meets productivity and quality standards while managing an average workload efficiently.
  • Demonstrates clear verbal and written communication skills, including giving concise reports and maintaining legible documentation.
  • Delegates duties appropriately, follows up on tasks, and participates in client-specific teaching and discharge planning.
  • Assumes responsibility for ongoing professional education, completing mandatory in-service requirements and at least 20 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Understands the committee structure and functions at both the department and unit level.
  • Coordinates discharge planning by educating patients/families about diagnosis, medication, and discharge instructions.
  • Regularly discusses patient progress, problems, and needs with physicians and the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Ensures high levels of quality care by complying with regulatory standards and participating in quality monitoring initiatives.
  • Assesses signs and symptoms indicating changes in patient condition and reports them promptly.
  • Performs interventions based on identified priorities, plans of care, infection control standards, and hospital policies.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance/Process Improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
  • Uses supplies in a cost-effective and efficient manner while collaborating with management on supply adjustments.
  • Ensures care is provided using the attributes of Careful Nursing, maintains trustworthy collaboration, provides health education, fosters safety and comfort, and engages in participatory–authoritative management.
  • Carries out additional duties related to patient care and unit operations as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • Ability to quickly recognize changes in patient condition and needs.
  • Knowledge of patients’ growth and development needs.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in fulfilling work duties.
