Respiratory Therapist, RRT - Nights
We're hiring a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department at University of Chicago Medicine’s main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. This full-time Night Shift role supports the adult patient population, with student opportunities available for those enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program. Key Responsibilities
- Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed by physician order or via established departmental protocols and documents the procedures accurately into the EPIC system.
- Delivers intermittent (Small Volume Nebulizer, MDI, etc.) or continuous medication therapy (bronchodilators, steroids, mucolytics, etc.) per approved protocols and documents these in real time.
- Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures including chest physiotherapy, coughing/deep breathing techniques, and use of specialized devices, while accurately documenting in the EPIC system.
- Initiates and maintains non-invasive ventilation (NIV) procedures (BIPAP, CPAP, High Flow Cannula) assessing patient status and equipment performance, with proper documentation.
- Manages mechanical ventilation by initiating, maintaining, and checking ventilator status, including patient assessments for weaning plans, with accurate, timely documentation.
- Provides ventilator management by monitoring hemodynamic parameters and documenting ventilator weaning parameters and spontaneous breathing trials accurately.
- Conducts Arterial Blood Gas analyses per hospital and department guidelines, including troubleshooting and quality control of ABG analyzers.
- Assists with patient transport within the facility when using oxygen delivery systems or ventilatory support equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two-year duration)
- Diploma or Certificate of Completion and Associate’s Degree from an accredited academic institution
- Effective communication and documentation skills (both verbal and written)
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by The National Board for Respiratory Care
- Licensed by The State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
- Basic Life Support Healthcare provider certification (American Heart Association)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification; PALS Certification; or ACLS Certification preferred, based on the patient care area and primary patient populations served
