Position Overview

Responsibilities: As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer/Ultrasound, you will produce sonographic images of High-Risk OB/Gyne, General, and vascular structures as well as internal organs and cavities to aid in diagnosing disease. You will operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment using appropriate transducers and operational controls to obtain the most diagnostic images possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Has a thorough understanding of ultrasound equipment and physics to produce high quality images for review by the imaging physician or radiologist.
  • Demonstrates the ability to discern the difference between real anatomic reflections from tissue versus artifact and adjusts controls to reduce artifacts.
  • Integrates diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history, and medical records, adapting the sonographic exam as necessary.
  • Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted ACR/SDMS/AIUM and departmental protocols as directed by reading physicians.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment in a clean and sanitized condition at all times; reports any damage or malfunction immediately and cleans every transducer and cable after each use.
  • Utilizes AIDET principles with all patients by acknowledging them, introducing yourself, providing exam duration, explaining procedures, and thanking them for visiting.
  • Verifies patient identity by checking their registration ID band and confirming the patient’s full name and date of birth.
  • Understands and applies Doppler controls and principles to produce proper images for evaluation and diagnosis.
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal anatomy, recognizing pathology and fluid collections to create an accurate imaging file.
  • Assists in performing biopsies, fluid and tissue aspirations, documenting these procedures using ultrasound imaging.
  • When fully trained in specialized areas (breast, pediatric, vascular, OB/GYN, or general ultrasound), produces accurate imaging using the appropriate scanning techniques.
  • Ensures proper status assignment in Meditech and PACS, attaching all relevant ultrasound orders in the designated software.
  • Assigns ultrasound studies to the designated reading physician based on exam type and ensures OB studies are not in preliminary status.
  • Shares responsibility for performing exams on inpatients, ED patients, portable exams, and Schwab patients while communicating effectively with caregivers and office staff.
  • Performs quality assurance tests on ultrasound machines frequently and reports any defects to the biomedical engineering department.
  • Ensures proper protocol and documentation of the high-level disinfection process for ultrasound probes and reviews the log book for inconsistencies.
  • Exhibits shift flexibility and is willing to rotate across multiple system locations including MSH, HCH, La Villita, Hawthorne, and Lawndale, as well as cover PTO, call-ins, and emergencies.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certified within two years of hire. RDMS (AB, OB/GYN) or Breast certification is required for caregivers in General and OB/Gyne areas; RVT is required for caregivers in Vascular.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
