Job Description

Position Overview

The CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an AI Security Researcher to pioneer innovative research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. In this role, you will collaborate with elite professionals to address vulnerabilities in AI systems, reverse engineer malicious code, and develop approaches that improve the robustness and security of critical systems for national and global impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop state-of-the-art approaches for analyzing the robustness of AI systems.
  • Identify vulnerabilities in AI systems and analyze how attackers adapt their tradecraft.
  • Reverse engineer malicious code to design and develop innovative analysis tools.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of security techniques and contribute to the evolution of defense strategies.
  • Publish research findings and shape best practices in AI security for industry and government.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in machine learning, cybersecurity, statistics, or a related discipline with 3 years of relevant experience; OR MS with 1 year of experience.
  • Demonstrated passion for AI/ML and cybersecurity with practical experience in vulnerability research and analysis.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML software packages (e.g., Numpy, PyTorch, TensorFlow, ART) and reverse engineering tools (e.g., Ghidra, IDA Pro).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C/C++, or other low-level languages alongside strong technical communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel (approximately 5%) and ability to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree or additional certifications in AI, cybersecurity, or related fields.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary or government-funded research projects.
  • Track record of publications or contributions to the field of AI security.
