Job Description

Position Overview

Hobby Lobby Distribution is responsible for receiving, storing, and shipping merchandise to all of Hobby Lobby's 1,000+ retail stores around the country. With one central Distribution Center comprising 11 buildings and over 12 million square feet—with more than 50 miles of conveyor, automated picking systems, robotic vehicles, and industrial machinery—the operation is vast and dynamic. The Hobby Lobby Mechanical Engineering Department designs, installs, maintains, and improves all industrial and material handling equipment to ensure smooth, safe, and efficient processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procuring and analyzing data in order to recommend process improvements.
  • Improving the safety and function of existing automated systems using industrial controls, software applications, and mechanical design.
  • Collaborating with Industrial Engineering, Software Engineering, and Warehouse Management to design material handling systems.
  • Managing the installation and commissioning of automated systems and equipment.
  • Supporting maintenance managers and maintenance technicians.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with industrial machinery.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems and schematics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PLC and other industrial application programming.
  • Experience with programming languages including Python, Java, and SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems such as Ignition or Kepware.
  • Industrial networking design and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and other drafting tools for the design of mechanical and control systems.
  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and effective communication with co-workers, vendors, and customers.
  • Ability to work well with multiple technical disciplines and adapt personal goals to company objectives.
  • Passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals.
