Our client, a leader in advanced aerospace technologies, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their innovative team in Chicago, Illinois, US. This role is critical to the design, development, and testing of next-generation aerospace systems. You will be instrumental in transforming conceptual ideas into tangible, high-performance mechanical solutions. The ideal candidate possesses a strong foundation in mechanical principles, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of engineering.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of complex aerospace components and systems from concept through production.
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings, and assembly instructions using advanced modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo).
  • Perform stress analysis, thermal analysis, and vibration analysis using FEA tools to ensure design integrity and performance under extreme conditions.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, systems engineers, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure seamless integration and manufacturability.
  • Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM) and technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct design reviews, providing clear and concise explanations of design choices and trade-offs.
  • Research and implement new materials, manufacturing processes, and technologies to enhance product performance and reduce costs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues that arise during prototype testing and production.
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and technical support.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering and aerospace design.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree: in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years: of progressive experience in mechanical design, with a significant portion in the aerospace industry.
  • Proficiency: in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo) and PDM/PLM systems.
  • Experience: with FEA software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
  • In-depth understanding: of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes (machining, additive manufacturing, casting, etc.), and industry standards.
  • Strong knowledge: of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Excellent problem-solving: analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Effective communication: and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
  • Experience: with composite materials and their design considerations is a plus.
  • Familiarity: with aerospace system requirements and testing protocols.
