Job Description
Position Overview
The Division of Family and Child Health (DFCH) at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is dedicated to creating and overseeing programs and policies that support the health and well-being of families and children in New York City. This role focuses on implementing health education activities, particularly in school settings, with an emphasis on reproductive health and social justice. The position aims to empower families and children to recognize their health potential and access necessary health services.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the health care team to implement health education activities in school settings
- Develop vast knowledge of reproductive healthcare and other health topics as needed
- Present information within a social/reproductive justice framework
- Provide health education sessions to students with emphasis on adolescent sexuality and reproductive health
- Develop relationships between school-based medical rooms and community-based clinics
- Coordinate and assist with follow-up for students who have missed appointments
- Conduct workshops on adolescent sexuality and parent/adolescent communication
- Organize and monitor the inventory of all educational materials
- Utilize the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to maintain adequate student health records
- Develop effective methods for publicizing the reproductive health education program
- Utilize appropriate multi-media teaching aids for education programs
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing special health education events and campaigns
- Maintain effective professional relationships with school staff, colleagues, and supervisors
- Contribute to program planning and evaluation by maintaining up-to-date records and entering program data into electronic systems
- Participate in all mandated NYC DOHMH and OSH trainings and professional development sessions
- Perform other related responsibilities as required
Required Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in developing or presenting public health education programs or counseling in relevant areas
- A master's degree in public health education, public/community health administration, or related fields and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in the above areas
- For Assignment Level II: Two additional years of full-time satisfactory experience for a total of four years for candidates with a baccalaureate degree, and two years for candidates with a master's degree
- For Assignment Level III: Three additional years of full-time satisfactory experience for a total of five years for candidates with a baccalaureate degree, and three years for candidates with a master's degree, with at least one year in a supervisory or administrative capacity
