Job Description

Position Overview

The Line Apprentice position supports operations by ensuring service to new and existing customers, while learning the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. Employees must be available for on-call duty and work flexible hours—including nights, weekends, and holidays—all while adhering to strict safety protocols. Compensation: Hourly Pay Rate: $28.42.

Applicants should be prepared to select a preferred work location from multiple options and, if required, relocate within 12 months at their own expense.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install and repair electrical equipment—including street lighting, load control devices, transformers, capacitors, meters, and more.
  • Construct overhead and underground distribution lines per engineering specifications (e.g., setting poles, pulling cable, installing transformers).
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs using test equipment (volt/amp meters) to ensure proper performance.
  • Respond promptly to trouble calls when equipment fails or electrical service is interrupted.
  • Represent Duke Energy professionally and support company goals in all interactions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers (VAL) and Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within one year, including meeting physical requirements (DOT Physical, DOT Certification, and Respirator Clearance).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate from Lineman's Training School or Technical School Line program.
  • Experience in the electric utility industry, including work near power lines and climbing various structures.
  • Military experience or experience responding to natural disasters/emergency situations.
