In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse provides and coordinates psychiatric nursing care services to patients. This role involves direct care, crisis intervention, patient and family education, and health promotion activities – all while working both in-person and remotely to support patients and contribute to their journey toward recovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care of assigned patients, identifying actual or potential problems and strengths.
  • Participates actively in and supports the total therapeutic program of the unit.
  • Collects information from various sources using observation, communication, and physical assessment; monitors patients remotely via approved technology when required.
  • Writes timely and accurate reports of patient assessments, observations, and education, utilizing available software/hardware applications for data collection and analysis.
  • Communicates and consults with the health care team regarding patient care, sets priorities, assigns and delegates tasks to support staff, and explains care plans to patients and their families.
  • Advocates for patients’ rights including autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
  • Serves as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils aimed at improving patient care and work environments.
  • May perform phlebotomy duties in accordance with BCCNM standards.
  • Contributes to the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students by precepting or mentoring, and engages in self-learning to maintain clinical competency.
  • Assists in the evaluation of patient care programs, techniques, and standards by offering feedback on effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices.
  • May provide services on an outreach basis to assess and engage with patients within their communities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). (May require completion of a substance use certificate program.)
  • At least one year of recent, related experience in inpatient mental health services, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current Class 5 Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness, substance use treatment, and psychopharmacology including the indications and potential side-effects of medications.
  • Counselling and group facilitation skills, with an understanding of relevant legislation and government policies related to mental health and substance use practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with patients, families/caregivers, and the interprofessional care team.
  • Commitment to delivering person-centered care with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy for special populations.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Proficiency in using related equipment, software, hardware, and remote/virtual technology applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the required duties of the position.
