The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team is seeking a South Region Planning & Optimization Engineer who will report to the South Region Planning Director. In this role you will work closely with value chain members and cross-functional teams – including Clean Products, Crude and Feedstocks, Marketing, Refining, and MPLX – to optimize profitability and broaden your understanding of Gulf Coast market dynamics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the commercial aspects of refinery operations including feedstock selection, product/intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
  • Develop and communicate strategies to capture missed opportunities and close production optimization gaps based on a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics.
  • Assist in collaboration meetings with the value chain to discuss local and regional economic drivers.
  • Develop optimized and executable production plans using linear programming simulation models; modify plans as demand/margin conditions change and identify related constraints.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of buy-or-make options by evaluating cost, quality, supply chain implications, and market dynamics while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Assist in developing decision-making frameworks and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Analyze historical refinery data to identify trends and improvement opportunities, validate data accuracy, and develop backcast models to evaluate past performance.
  • Apply analytical skills to identify issues in refinery operations and propose solutions with guidance.
  • Provide linear programming (LP) support in the development and justification of capital projects.
  • Use LP to develop long-term business plans for the South region.
  • Build out turnaround cases in LP for one year and beyond, identifying opportunities for optimization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience (Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience is preferred).
