Job Description

Position Overview

Rice University, located on a beautiful 300-acre tree-lined campus in Houston, Texas, is one of the nation’s top 20 universities. The director of marketing for the Department of Athletics will play an integral role in driving revenue and attendance. In this role, you will lead the marketing, sales, and communications teams to create a positive, exciting game day atmosphere and enhance fan engagement while furthering the Rice Athletics brand. This is an on-campus position with all duties performed in-person.

Key Responsibilities

  • Game-day scripting, leading, and implementing of in-game marketing and fan engagement efforts, including in-game music, entertainment, public address, video board operations, and fan engagement camera setups.
  • Developing, recommending, and implementing marketing and promotional strategies to increase awareness and attendance.
  • Managing the department’s daily advertising efforts on social media to generate revenue and promote athletic events.
  • Overseeing day-to-day online and digital marketing initiatives and collaborating to execute marketing programs and campaigns.
  • Implementing ticket promotions, sales plans, advertising campaigns, and community/statewide outreach events.
  • Collaborating with internal colleagues to create highly engaging fan experiences.
  • Creating initiatives for student and fan development as well as community outreach aimed at increasing attendance.
  • Conceptualizing content and strategy for video board use at select venues.
  • Managing game-day operations for athletic events, including integration with videoboard, public address systems, and promotional activities to foster a positive game atmosphere.
  • Supervising the Assistant Director of Marketing, Marketing Associate, and department interns through training, evaluations, and duty assignments.
  • Maintaining continuous communication with campus businesses and groups to drive awareness and boost participation.
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director of External Relations.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • Experience Required: 1+ years of sports marketing experience, including experience gained while a student
  • Requirements: Must possess (or have the ability to obtain within thirty days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with no more than three moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past three years, and no DUIs or DWIs within the past five years
  • Qualifications: Strong oral and written communication skills; organization, creativity, and analytical problem-solving skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Photo Shop, and various social media platforms
  • Ability to work at athletic events, including outdoors, with availability on evenings and weekends
  • Location: On-campus position with all duties performed in-person
