Job Description
Position Overview
A Civil Engineer VI performs responsible professional engineering work by supervising a large engineering section or assisting in directing the activities of a major engineering division. This role involves supervising the preparation of designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports, as well as performing other duties as required.
Current Vacancies:
• 3 vacancies with the Department of Environmental Services
• 2 vacancies in the Wastewater Engineering and Construction Division (multiple branches)
• 1 vacancy in the Collection System Engineering Branch – overseeing sewer improvements including tunnels, interceptor sewers, trunk and smaller-sized sewers
• 1 vacancy in the Plant Engineering Branch – managing wastewater facilities projects (treatment, air/odor control, reuse facilities, pump stations, force mains)
• 1 vacancy in the Refuse Collection and Disposal Division – directing and coordinating administrative, technical, financial, and operational activities
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and supervise the preparation of engineering designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports.
- Coordinate operations across multiple divisions, including Wastewater Engineering, Collection System Engineering, Plant Engineering, and Refuse Collection and Disposal.
- Plan, direct, develop, and review engineering studies and support during construction for sewer and wastewater facilities projects.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards amid occasional exposure to construction hazards, chemicals, and challenging field environments.
- Serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering specialty (or equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college/university).
- A minimum of three years of registered professional Civil Engineering experience, including at least one year in a supervisory role.
- Current State of Hawaii registration as a professional engineer in Civil Engineering (or commitment to obtain Hawaii licensure if holding an out-of-state license).
- Possession of a valid driver’s license (Type 3/automobile).
