Job Description
Position Overview
Under general supervision, the role is responsible for the structural engineering design, construction, and preparation of plans and specifications for major municipal projects. The position also manages bridge inspections as well as maintenance and capital improvement programs for the division.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervises subordinate engineers and draftsmen in conducting structural engineering studies and preparing designs, plans, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for major municipal projects.
- Prepares plans, policies, and work assignments while reviewing and directing work efforts.
- Conducts structural engineering investigations and studies, including the development of remedial plans and technical reports.
- Designs, selects, and approves major design features along with preparing construction documents for bridges, buildings, and municipal infrastructures.
- Reviews and approves construction materials, testing results, and construction methods; manages multiple projects as Project Engineer per MDOT and FHWA specifications.
- Performs geotechnical reviews and oversees field assignments as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.
- Five years of experience in designing and preparing structural engineering plans and construction documents for large municipal projects, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
- Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Michigan is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate level courses or Master's degree in structural engineering.
- Certification by the Michigan Department of Transportation for the inspection of bridges is preferred.
