Job Description
Position Overview
Title and starting pay rate (Compensation) of this position may vary based on years of experience. The role involves providing patient care, assisting with procedures and activities of daily living, performing core nursing assistant responsibilities, and developing advanced skills as needed by the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
- Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
- Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
- Performs UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
- Provides instruction to patients and their families under RN direction and may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol.
- Strictly adheres to patient care policies, safety procedures, and supports department changes and quality initiatives.
- Documents in the medical record according to established procedures and completes department clerical functions as needed.
- Performs additional tasks including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning), point of care testing, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and monitoring for hospital-acquired conditions and patient safety indicators.
- Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department and contributes to universal unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Demonstrates understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and health professional impairment while ensuring safety for patients and self.
- Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia detection, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping and removal.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must have either: 1 year of general healthcare experience; or 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days; or enrollment in a PT/OT/PA or related healthcare training program with at least one clinical rotation; or a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
- Successful completion of the UPMC patient care technician class and eRecord training.
- Licensure/Certifications: CPR (per AHA standards with didactic and skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire; Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR; ACLS preferred; Acts 31, 33, 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic—or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program—is preferred.
