Job Description
Position Overview
This temporary/part‐time role at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) involves complete data collection that supports long‐term research and development. The position will focus on collecting soil, water, and biological data and maintaining environmental monitoring capacity to produce valuable information for developing a landscape‐scale model of soil water availability.
Key Responsibilities
- 85% – Maintain monitoring and operations at the MEF per established schedules and protocols, including sub-daily to quarterly data collection, new soil and water sample collection, and installation of environmental sensors and measurement infrastructure.
- 5% – Enter data, maintain field work records, and contribute to metadata documentation and archival processes.
- 5% – Participate in project meetings and professional development opportunities.
- 5% – Collaborate with Forest Service personnel to document and publish data.
Required Qualifications
- BS in hydrology, soil science, environmental studies, ecology, engineering, or a closely related field
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Commitment to engaging with research partners including senior personnel, graduate students, and technical staff
- Ability to perform moderately strenuous outdoor work in northern Minnesota as well as office and laboratory work as needed
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, insurance coverage, and a safe driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with basic hydrological and meteorological measurements
- Knowledge of environmental sensors, dataloggers, and associated telecommunications devices/protocols
- Expertise in soil moisture measurement and monitoring methods
- Familiarity with small catchment and long-term monitoring studies
