The Mission Critical Telecommunications Engineer 2 position involves the design, coordination, and implementation of telecommunication structured cabling systems for high density, AI-driven data centers.
The engineer will research, develop, and coordinate solutions for telecommunication cabling, equipment, pathways, spaces, and grounding/bonding for both inside and outside plant infrastructure. They will interface with customers, project leadership, field teams, other trades, manufacturers, and engineers to produce constructible deliverables including floor/ceiling plans, enlarged layout plans, detail drawings, riser diagrams, administrative and test plans, quality control studies, materials lists, cabling schedules, operations manuals, and warranties. They will oversee technical requirements throughout the project lifecycle by assisting with solution development, troubleshooting construction discrepancies, and contributing to overall schedule and budget planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, identify, coordinate, and track project requirements.
- Coordinate communication connectivity requirements including backbone and interrack cabling, work area outlet types, cabling media and connector types, system topology, and device locations with Data and Wireless Networking, Audio Visual, Security, Mechanical, Electrical, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate detailed telecommunications space plans with input from Architecture, MEP, and Electronic Systems.
- Design detailed telecommunications pathway plans to support inside and outside plant cabling infrastructure, including fill calculations and BIM coordination.
- Identify, write, and respond to Requests for Information (RFI).
- Produce coordinated detailed design and construction drawings in AutoCAD or REVIT based on project specifications.
- Develop coordinated detailed telecommunications construction specifications based on project criteria.
- Create and manage cable run lists/system labeling and cable acceptance test plans based on specification requirements.
- Identify products, create Bill of Materials, and develop product data deliverables meeting project and system requirements.
- Implement the M.C. Dean Quality Control process to ensure deliverables comply with project requirements and engineering standards.
- Conduct site surveys, produce reports, and propose solutions based on site observations.
- Produce prefabrication designs and test procedures for Pre-Installation and Check Out (PITCO) activities.
- Learn the operation of and lead in the design of active systems including nurse call systems, public address systems, distributed antenna systems, and emergency phones.
- Develop working knowledge of and utilize relevant sections of NFPA codes, TIA Standards, BICSI publications, or other relevant criteria.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2+ years’ experience in the telecommunications structured cabling industry for inside and outside plant pathways, cabling, components, testing, and design, with a Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable Engineering field.
- Detailed, motivated self-starter able to work independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to expand knowledge to new systems and technologies as project demands evolve.
- Basic understanding of TIA standards and NFPA Codes.
- Ability to successfully pass an extensive background check.
- Availability for up to 10% travel as required.
- Ability to work extensively on computer screens, sit for prolonged periods, use hands and fingers dexterously, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Capable of applying general rules to specific problems and understanding oral information.
Preferred Qualifications
- CompTIA Network+ Engineer-in-Training (EIT/FE) or Professional Engineer (PE) with Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) credentials.
- Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).
- Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) certification.
- BICSI RCDD certification.
- Experience with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) or Building Information Management (BIM) systems such as REVIT.
- Working knowledge of active communication systems such as Public Address, Nurse Call, Distributed Antenna Systems, WLAN, and Emergency Phones.
- Manufacturer certifications and prior field installation and testing experience are a plus.
