Job Description
Position Overview
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, one of the nation’s leading metropolitan medical centers and the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, is seeking a full-time Hospital Attendant 1 within the Department of Central Transport. In this role, you will attend to patients’ daily living and personal hygiene needs, assist with housekeeping and cleaning tasks, and help transport patients, equipment, and supplies throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend to patients’ personal hygiene, daily living, and mobility needs to create an atmosphere conducive to treatment.
- Collect and transport patients’ laundry and dry cleaning to the appropriate locations.
- Receive, transport, and secure patients’ valuables and belongings.
- Escort patients to and from facilities where treatments are administered.
- Assist with feeding patients who require help to ensure proper nourishment.
- Help bathe, dress, brush teeth, and trim fingernails and toenails; assist with incontinence situations.
- Bring bedpans and urinals to patients as needed.
- Under supervision of professional staff, move, position, lift, and transport patients using appropriate aids.
- Greet and communicate with patients, listen to their concerns, and encourage active participation in treatment and rehabilitation.
- Observe patients in treatment and non-treatment areas and document simple observations for clinical staff.
- Assist in collecting patient samples for laboratory analysis, when necessary.
- Perform housekeeping, inventory, and cleaning duties to maintain sanitary clinical areas.
- Keep an inventory of supplies and complete requisition forms to ensure appropriate levels are maintained.
- Change bed and hospital linens to ensure availability of clean items.
- Mop floors, wash windows, walls, bedside stands, beds, tables, chairs, toilets, and equipment as needed.
- Clean thermometers, equipment, and other instruments, and transport items to central sterile departments when directed.
Required Qualifications
- Non-Competitive: Possess or demonstrate the ability to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities during the probationary period.
- Ability to lift patients and heavy objects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Individuals certified eligible for the 55 B/C program under the Governor's Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities will be considered. (Provide a copy of your letter of eligibility.)

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a hospital environment.
- Strong computer literacy.

- Work Schedule: Variable Days; 1:00pm to 9:00pm (Full-Time)
- Compensation: $34,312 - $42,565 Base Salary plus $4,000 Location Pay
- Bargaining Unit: CSEA
