Position Overview

Sun Life U.S. is one of the largest providers of employee and government benefits, operating nationwide and serving approximately 50 million Americans. In a hybrid work model that blends in‐office collaboration with virtual flexibility, we are seeking a Director, Human Resources Business Partner to shape the employee experience, partner with business leaders to drive talent capabilities and support strategic business objectives. This role is part of the senior leadership team with a focus on talent strategy, performance, and change management. Compensation is competitive nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a business leader to drive the talent and culture agenda, partnering with leaders to implement and measure talent strategies.
  • Strategize, develop and execute on specific talent priorities and needs of the division.
  • Practice an agile mindset by prioritizing and adjusting time and effort on strategic advisory work as business needs evolve.
  • Establish HR and talent initiatives, consulting and influencing leaders and managers to address employee engagement.
  • Stay current on market and industry talent trends and best practices to evolve talent strategies.
  • Identify key talent trends and insights using a data‐driven approach to develop custom strategies and tactics.
  • Use effective storytelling to consult with leaders on performance outcomes and ensure programs are meeting business goals.
  • Serve as a coach and trusted advisor, providing career development guidance to divisions and their leaders.
  • Maximize your “seat at the table” by actively partnering with senior leadership in strategic meetings and one-on-ones.
  • Partner with U.S. and Global Centers of Excellence (COEs) to advance HR initiatives and measure business outcomes.
  • Advocate for change by fostering effective change management practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement in both HR and business matters to support strategic initiatives.
  • Plan and execute Business as Usual (BAU) and annual talent activities such as performance cycles and compensation reviews.
  • Lead talent reviews and succession planning efforts with senior leadership.
  • Act as the first point of contact on performance, compensation and other escalated employee issues in collaboration with COEs.
  • Support the execution of HR and talent programs in collaboration with U.S. and Global COEs.
  • Consult and influence leaders on critical BAU matters that deliver tangible business outcomes.
  • Participate in high-impact recruitment efforts, including leadership interview panels and executive assessments.
  • Mentor HR team members, including Associate HRBPs.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of human resources generalist experience supporting diverse functional groups.
  • Broad understanding of all HR disciplines including organizational development, employee relations, talent acquisition, learning & development, and compensation.
  • Experience in building, linking, and implementing programs and processes aligned with business strategy.
  • Solution-minded approach with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to execute quickly, effectively, and consistently.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information and navigating sensitive situations with professionalism.
  • Proven ability to interact with all organizational levels and build strong, trusted relationships.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent consulting, coaching, and conflict management skills.
  • Strong impact and influence skills with experience as a trusted advisor to senior management.
  • Ability to work effectively within a virtual team environment.
  • Strong business acumen with the aptitude to quickly assimilate new information.
  • Capability to function independently in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and recommend solutions.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities with efficiency.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and HRIS systems.
