Position Overview
Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). As a Staff Engineer supporting the Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) Project within the Scorpius Accelerator Group, you will contribute to developing the world’s newest Linear Induction Accelerator (Scorpius) installed 963 feet underground. Your role is pivotal in delivering high-hazard experimentation and incident response capabilities that are critical to national security.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a key member of the ASD Technology Maturation and Design teams focused on mechanical engineering systems for the Scorpius accelerator.
- Plan and conduct evaluations, selection, application, and modification of mechanical parts and assemblies.
- Implement innovative approaches for designing and drafting complex chassis builds and mechanical assemblies.
- Prepare necessary administrative and technical documents for the design and construction of complex assemblies.
- Develop high-quality 3D CAD designs of Scorpius accelerator systems, structures, and components.
- Produce detailed engineering assembly and component manufacturing drawings that adhere to ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Research, analyze, design, test, and verify engineering solutions and technology innovations.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate project activities and related documentation.
- Support research and development as well as technology maturation activities in laboratory testing environments.
- Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while ensuring safety, security, compliance, and adherence to project schedules.
- Exercise engineering judgment under limited technical direction and advise senior team members on technology development.
- Represent the team on internal and external technical committees as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by ABET, a Calculus-based STEM degree, or a Professional Engineer license.
- At least 5 years’ relevant experience demonstrating technical specialization or cross-disciplinary expertise.
- Proven experience in precision mechanical design of structures, systems, and components with an emphasis on manufacturability.
- Knowledge of various fabrication processes including metals machining, welding, and metal forming.
- Experience working within a formal design process, including managing engineering change orders and approvals.
- Ability to interface with machine shops and resolve manufacturing challenges with fabricators.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Capacity to collaborate with vendors and stakeholders across the DOE Complex.
- Experience in planning and delivering specialized technical training on advanced methods and best practices.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which includes passing a pre-employment drug screen and comprehensive background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on large-scale accelerators and high vacuum systems.
- Proven expertise in analyzing, designing, or building systems for particle accelerators—including beam transport, vacuum systems, precision alignment, and heat transfer management.
- Experience leading technical projects or teams and directing designer/drafters and technicians.
- Proficiency with PTC Creo mechanical CAD software.
- Ability to manage responsibilities across multiple sites, including the Nevada National Security Site and various national laboratories.
- Flexibility to balance work activities and travel; familiarity with a 4/10 work schedule (Monday – Thursday) is a plus.
