Position Overview

TDOT’s Engineering Series is seeking a Transportation Engineer responsible for planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation systems in the State of Tennessee. In this full-time role based in Knoxville, TN (Department of Transportation, Knox County), you will coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, manage risks, and ensure projects are completed within scope, schedule, and budget. Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a subject matter expert in applicable discipline-specific project activities.
• Coordinate with the Project Manager and project team regarding potential impacts to scope, schedule, and budget.
• Perform discipline-specific activities as outlined in the Project Delivery Network (PDN).
• Assist with multidisciplinary reviews as part of the Quality Assurance process.
• Design, implement, and operate Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) strategies, including the application of emerging technologies.
• Participate in Risk Management Assessments and execute risk mitigation strategies.
• Identify design conflicts, offer recommendations, and coordinate proactive solutions with other disciplines.
• Participate in the scope development, selection, and administration of consultant contracts for all project phases.
• Attend and represent the department in public meetings, addressing customer needs and concerns.
• Serve as a mentor to support career development and cultivate communication and leadership skills within TDOT.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
• Active status as a professional engineer with the State of Tennessee.
• Minimum of 4 years demonstrated competency in developing and/or constructing transportation projects.
