Job Description

Position Overview

Located in Chicago, Illinois at Rush University Medical Center and part of the RML Specimen Acquisition department, the Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and other minimally invasive techniques. This role serves as a liaison between physicians and Rush Medical Laboratories while exemplifying Rush’s mission, vision, and values.

Work Type: Part Time (Total FTE between 0.5 and 0.89) | Shift: Shift 1 (4:00 AM - 12:30 PM)

Key Responsibilities

  • Suggests and develops new ideas and approaches in the workplace while exhibiting adaptability and a willingness to change.
  • Creates constructive relationships with peers, management, customers, and other departments to achieve positive clinical and service outcomes.
  • Responds promptly to pages and volunteers to help others complete work when time permits.
  • Reports back to the laboratory for further assignments once current tasks are complete.
  • Verifies patient identification and labels specimens according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at all times.
  • Collects specimens in accordance with laboratory requirements using proper phlebotomy techniques.
  • Establishes and maintains positive, productive working relationships, inspiring cooperation, trust, and mutual respect.
  • Acts as a resource for technical questions and demonstrates thorough knowledge of tasks such as timed collections, proper site selection, order of draw, and scheduling.
  • Attends and documents required continuing education hours and helps train students and new employees by completing training checklists within deadlines.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work, including collecting timed specimens within 30 minutes, sending specimens via pneumatic tube within appropriate time frames, and checking soiled utility rooms.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and organized work area, phlebotomy cart, and personal appearance.
  • Manages supply levels appropriately by avoiding overstock and replenishing supplies at shift end.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of any issues (e.g., missed collections or patient unavailability) promptly and attempts problem resolution before escalation.
  • Performs accurate LIS order entry, double-checking orders to avoid mistakes, and is responsible for specimen accessioning and processing.
  • Documents missed or delayed draws on the clipboard and collection set labels as required.
  • Collects, cancels, and reschedules laboratory orders through effective communication with clinical staff, and clears pending reports at shift end.
  • Participates in special projects or events, such as health screenings and medical student training classes.
  • Acts as "tech-in-charge" when needed by overseeing operations per departmental guidelines and deferring issues to the appropriate personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification.
  • Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
