Job Description

Position Overview

The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel from our Nation’s past conflicts to their families and our Nation. DPAA personnel research, investigate, recover, and identify remains of DoD personnel unaccounted for from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Iraq conflicts and the Persian Gulf War. The DPAA Director (SES-3) reports to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)).

Required Qualifications

  • BASIC REQUIREMENT: Must possess a History degree or a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience meeting this criterion is acceptable.
  • Specialized Experience for GS-12 Qualification: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level demonstrating:
    • Using historical methodology to evaluate evidence (e.g., primary and secondary sources such as written, physical, and oral histories) to establish historical facts.
    • Assisting in archival research in foreign and domestic archives to compile data.
    • Analyzing evidence to draw actionable conclusions and make recommendations.
    • Working as a member of a team to locate, assess, and collect relevant evidence.
    • Preparing written documentation of research results for official publications and to inform the public.
  • Specialized Experience for GS-13 Qualification: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level demonstrating:
    • Applying historical methodology to gather and critically evaluate evidence and establish historical facts.
    • Developing and employing archival research strategies.
    • Applying actionable inferences from historical research.
    • Providing peer reviewed historical publications.
    • Presenting results in a concise, logically oriented narrative characterized by clarity, balance, and consistency with the evidence.
  • All qualifications and education requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement and clearly documented in your resume. Ensure you provide details such as months and hours worked per week for each relevant employment.
  • Education Documentation: You must include official/unofficial transcripts or degrees (or an equivalent course listing) from schools accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Active Duty Service Members: A certification letter on official military letterhead is required in lieu of a DD-214, confirming active service details including rank, dates of service, type of discharge, and character of service.
  • Current or Former Political Appointees: If applicable, disclose any recent employment as a political appointee (within the last 5 years) as required.
  • Time-in-Grade: Must be met by the closing date with appropriate documentation.
