Key Responsibilities
- Obtain patient escort assignments and schedules from a designated Dispatcher/Supervisor, Service Department and report to Nurse-in-Charge.
- Introduce self to patient, explain the nature of the trip, and escort the patient to and from the Nursing Service or designated area until relieved by the appropriate personnel.
- Transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed or stretcher-bed, and escort ambulatory patients (including those with intravenous apparatus) to various nursing units, x-ray, scheduled therapies, clinics, diagnostic and therapeutic units, transfers, discharges, religious and recreation centers, or accompany children to school as needed.
- Maintain control of patients’ charts and release them only to authorized personnel.
- Keep records of patient transport activities, including pick-up time, arrival time at designated areas, and return time to the Nursing Service.
- Assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and morgue trays; use Hoyer lifters and other patient lifting devices when necessary.
- Escort newly-admitted patients to designated areas and help them store personal belongings such as luggage, packages, and clothing.
- Transport bodies or assist the Mortuary Caretaker with transporting bodies to the mortuary, including handling refrigeration, completing required forms, and delivering specimens, charts, or x-rays as needed.
- Ensure the ready availability, upkeep, and cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers, stretcher beds, and morgue trays, and sterilize incoming patients’ clothing and other items when required.
- Perform other duties as necessary, including handling emergency requisitions and transporting equipment and supplies.
Required Qualifications
- Elementary school graduation or equivalent ability to effectively communicate with patients.
- Ability to keep simple clinical records.
