Position Overview

With a long history of activism and a deep commitment to social justice, Oakland is recruiting for multiple Assistant Engineer positions in the Department of Transportation (OakDOT) and other divisions within Public Works and the Planning and Building Department. In these roles, you will help design and implement innovative transportation and infrastructure projects that advance mobility, safety, and equity for all Oakland residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and ensure that small residential projects meet model building codes and standards.
  • Assist the public by answering building code questions and providing technical support.
  • Support Civil Engineers and Project Managers with street improvement projects, including preparing Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) packages.
  • Lead AutoCAD efforts for in-house design projects covering demo, civil, striping, electrical, and landscaping plans.
  • Provide quality control and contracting oversight during construction projects in various Public Works divisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Detail-oriented professional with the ability to apply City, state, and national standards.
  • A strong team player with excellent communication skills and a proven track record in collaborating across diverse teams.
  • Experience in reviewing plans, specifications, and supporting documentation for compliance with relevant codes.
  • Ability to balance technical design work with effective field and stakeholder communication.
