Registrar Scheduler (Surgical Hospital)

Facility: University Medical Center of El Paso

Department: UMCSH Patient Access Reg/Sched (Surgical Hospital)

Schedule: Shift - Hours Full Time - Days - Varies

The Registrar Scheduler facilitates the patient flow for ancillary services necessary to schedule, register, and greet patients. Schedules patients for procedures and tests as needed. Receives and enters patient demographics and insurance information, appropriate charges for services rendered, and other pertinent information, allowing the clinic to track patient visits, ensure a smooth patient flow for appointments, and to bill for services provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedules patients for procedures and tests as needed.
  • Receives and enters patient demographics, insurance information, and service charges to assist with billing.
  • Verifies insurances via an electronic verification system or by contacting the insurance payer to verify eligibility and benefits.
  • Ensures that any pre-certification or authorization is obtained per payer protocols.
  • Manages multiple tasks while maintaining professional customer service.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to deal tactfully with Associates, patients, visitors and the public.
  • Basic computer literacy and keyboarding skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of commercial and managed care payers and terminology.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of insurance plan requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience Required: One year of experience in scheduling or patient access in a hospital or related setting required.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Qualifications: Knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with ICD coding preferred.
  • Qualifications: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) preferred.
