Position: Tumor Registrar, Oncology - Full-Time, Days

Job Description

Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Tumor Registrar with our Oncology department in Hyde Park. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Essential Job Functions

  • Case‑finding: Analyzes coded disease indexes, tumor conference minutes, staging forms, radiation reports, surgical reports, pathology reports, and autopsy reports to determine case eligibility; classifies each case as reportable or non‑reportable, assigns class of case, and enters reportable cases into the database suspense system.
  • Abstracting Cases: Examines and interprets cancer‑specific data from medical records for coding and data entry into a computerized cancer registry abstract; verifies clinical information with medical staff to ensure appropriate assignment of cancer diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and that data reflect the current standard of care.
  • Cancer Staging: Analyzes clinical and pathological diagnostic/staging procedures and test results to determine a derived collaborative stage; audits medical records for physician documentation; recommends TNM value assignments with supporting documentation when staging is missing, incomplete, or inaccurate.
  • Follow‑up: Collects patient follow‑up and survival data from medical records, follow‑up correspondence with patients and/or physicians, and other applicable sources; enters data into the registry database and calculates and reports rates of patient follow‑up on a regular basis.
  • Quality Assurance: Audits registry data for accuracy and completeness through peer reviews, database edits, case debates, and participation in the Cancer Registry Data Quality Subcommittee.
  • Manages database maintenance: Enters and maintains patient data to ensure conformance to registry operational standards; preserves confidentiality and security of patient data.
  • Troubleshoots: Recognizes computer problems, reports them to staff, assists in maintenance of equipment and supplies; performs related tasks as needed for effective operation of the registry; maintains credentials with professional associations through continuing education.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree: Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Certification: Registered Health Information certification (RHIT, RHIA) or Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to work within a team and with physicians and allied health professionals.
  • Ability to assess clinical source documents and apply coding rules.
  • Strong problem‑solving and organizational skills in a fast‑changing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Computer skills including cancer registry databases, networked hospital information systems, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Internet.
  • Knowledge of coding systems manuals: Collaborative Staging, AJCC, SEER, ICD‑O, FORDS, ISCR reporting manual.
  • Knowledge of Cancer Program Standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
