Position Overview

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, is seeking an Entry Level Distribution Studies Engineer. In this role, you will help reshape the distribution system so our clients can provide the power necessary for tomorrow’s needs. You will independently and collaboratively execute technical projects, manage your scope, schedule, and budget, and support the modernization of utility distribution systems. Remote work is available, with occasional travel to POWER offices as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform various studies to support the modernization of utility distribution systems, including FLISR (Fault, Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration).
  • Evaluate programs such as Volt-Var Optimization (IVVC, CVR) and support distribution resiliency along with ADMS (Advanced Distribution Management Systems).
  • Conduct studies focusing on the electrification of transportation and DER solutions (DERMS, NWA/NWS, Hosting Capacity, System Impact Studies).
  • Apply grid modernization practices including protection strategies (e.g., Wildfire Mitigation, FLISR, VVO) and advanced planning techniques (8760, Quasi Static Time Series Analysis).
  • Execute planning studies covering construction work plans, long-range plans, short-to-medium term plans, and analyses like real/reactive power flow, voltage drop, operational and outage studies, and load forecasting.
  • Interact with diverse teams to gather necessary information, track project schedules and budgets, perform quality checks, and assist with additional distribution disciplines as required.
  • Occasional travel is expected to attend meetings at POWER offices.

Required Qualifications

  • BSEE degree.
  • Focus in power systems or relevant power industry internship experience.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles, with proficiency in researching, evaluating alternatives, and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to work effectively in design teams with strong initiative and self-motivation to learn new topics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to present information and lead meetings.
  • Must successfully pass the client's background screening process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT certification with potential to obtain a PE license as experience requirements are met.
  • Exposure to Electrical Power System Analysis using software such as CYME, Milsoft, or Synergi.
  • Approximately two years of experience in the electrical power delivery industry.
  • Familiarity with utility standards and overhead/underground distribution design.
  • Experience with programming and/or scripting.
  • Experience with integration of distributed generation within the planning process.
