Job Description

Rig Welder (Contract)

Location: Bakersfield, CA and surrounding Kern County sites

Engagement Type: Contract / On-Call

Compensation: Hourly (DOE) + rig rate (if applicable)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Rig Welder to support industrial construction, maintenance, and repair projects in the Bakersfield and greater Kern County area. This role is contract-based and mobilized as needed to support field welding scopes across oil & gas, energy, mining, and heavy industrial facilities.

The ideal candidate will provide their own fully outfitted welding rig and be capable of executing high-quality welds in field conditions, often under time-sensitive operational constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field welding on carbon steel piping, structural steel, and equipment components
  • Execute SMAW welding (primarily E6010 / E7018) in accordance with project specifications and WPS requirements
  • Perform pipe and plate groove welds in multiple positions (2G, 5G, 6G preferred)
  • Conduct weld repairs, build-ups, and tie-ins during shutdowns and emergency maintenance
  • Interpret isometric drawings and P&IDs
  • Maintain compliance with site safety standards and Cal/OSHA regulations
  • Complete job documentation including weld logs and inspection sign-offs
  • Coordinate with project manager, inspectors, and field supervisors

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of field welding experience (oil & gas or industrial preferred)
  • Valid welding certifications (SMAW required; additional processes a plus)
  • Ability to pass site-specific weld tests
  • Own and maintain a fully equipped welding rig suitable for field work
  • Valid CA driver’s license and insurance
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred
  • TWIC card preferred
  • Strong knowledge of safe hot work practices

Preferred Experience

  • Work on pressure piping and process systems
  • Experience with carbon steel P-1 materials
  • Repair work in refineries, plants, or production facilities
  • Familiarity with ASME Section IX WPS requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
  • Work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Climb, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces as needed

Contract Details

  • On-call / project-based mobilization
  • Compensation structure may include hourly rate plus rig rate
  • Per diem may apply depending on location
  • Must provide proof of insurance (if 1099)
