Position Overview
Kiewit Power Engineering Group is seeking an experienced-level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to be a part of our growing team. Ideal candidates will provide instrumentation & control discipline technical expertise as well as I&C team leadership for the execution and evaluation of project designs. You will work independently on small projects or as part of a large multi-discipline team on major projects, collaborating with internal and external engineers and construction partners to deliver industry-leading engineering and physical design solutions.
Location: This position can be based in any of the following office locations: Lenexa, KS; Lone Tree, CO; Houston, TX; Raleigh, NC; Phoenix/Tempe, AZ; New York City, NY; or Woodcliff Lake, NJ. For roles in Chattanooga, TN; Detroit, MI; or Richmond, VA, the position will start remotely and transition to a hybrid/in office arrangement once the new office is established.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a lead or support engineer on a multitude of pursuits and projects, providing front line technical solutions related to design, construction, equipment, or operations of SCADA system replacement/upgrades and other I&C projects for power facilities.
- Evaluate, select, and apply engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for projects of varying sizes and complexity.
- Incorporate contractual and customer RFP requirements, professional service agreements, or other contractual obligations to ensure project goals are met or exceeded.
- Contribute to the development of client proposals and project cost estimates through cost, feasibility, and planning studies while analyzing customer needs and coordinating with other engineers.
- Apply a comprehensive understanding of departmental design practices, industry standard methods, applicable engineering codes, and Kiewit guidelines to prepare design calculations, project drawings, and specifications.
- Formulate technical specifications, perform bid evaluations, provide recommendations for equipment selection and contract awards, and coordinate interface points with construction partners and equipment suppliers.
- Schedule, review, and coordinate design efforts with project personnel.
- Oversee and/or perform supplier shop drawing review, comment resolution, and technical contract administration.
- Mentor and direct entry to mid-level engineers, providing coaching and direction to support skills development.
- Coordinate with internal and external partners—including cross-discipline teams, construction, vendors, fabricators, and owners—to address electrical/I&C design concepts and concerns.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical or Controls Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- Experience Required: At least 5 years' experience in instrumentation and controls engineering and design, with a minimum of three years in the power generation market.
- Familiarity with control system programming concepts.
- Experience with SCADA systems and PLC.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Keen attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
- Strong work ethic and a commitment to getting the job done.
- Demonstrated leadership and the confidence to mentor peers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred.
- DCS system experience is considered desirable.
