Job Description

Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist position is located at Location: Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs - 820 S Damen Ave. Chicago - IL 60612. This full-time role requires working on a Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00AM-3:30PM with rotating weekends and holidays. Telework is not available and this is not a virtual position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves at full performance level by independently carrying out day-to-day laboratory operations.
  • Develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates laboratory procedures and results in line with current regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts testing on a variety of biological specimens using manual or automated methods, including quality control and routine maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Correlates abnormal lab data with pathological states and determines the need for additional tests.
  • May assume roles such as laboratory safety officer, analyzer specialist, primary operator on new test systems, quality control specialist, supply control, or coordinator for competency assessment programs.
  • Exercises independent technical judgment by organizing priorities and setting appropriate action plans with minimal supervision.
  • Monitors quality control systems while collaborating in patient diagnosis and treatment and providing education to healthcare professionals and the public.
  • Assumes responsibility for equipment maintenance, documentation of procedures, method validation studies, and inventory management.
  • Provides technical consultation, assists with staff competency assessments, and ensures compliance with federal clinical laboratory regulations.
  • Coordinates instructional activities for Clinical Laboratory Scientist students in a NMCLS-accredited program.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but will not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • Citizenship: Must be a US Citizen.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403 (f).
  • Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
  • Qualifications: Certification: Must meet one of the following options – (a) Generalist certification as an MLS by ASCP BOC or AMT; (b) Generalist certification as an MT by ASCP BOR or AMT; or (c) Categorical or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT.
  • Experience Required: At least one (1) year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-9, OR three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph.D./equivalent in medical technology or a related science.
  • Qualifications: Must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) at the GS-11 level including: professional clinical laboratory science principles; laboratory quality control and assurance procedures; proficiency in informatics and instrumentation maintenance; ability to interpret laboratory results and complex instructions; and effective communication with healthcare team members.
