Job Description

Position Overview

The Broward County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Communications Operator for its Regional Communications Division. This permanent, full-time position pays Salary: $57,426.52 Annually and is based in Broward County, FL. The role is entry level with an opportunity to gain both classroom and on-the-job training in emergency call taking and communications dispatch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend the Regional Communications Academy to receive preparatory training for a career in regional communications.
  • Actively participate in classroom instruction covering law enforcement, fire, and medical call interrogation techniques and IAED protocols.
  • Successfully complete assigned classroom work, testing, and necessary certifications.
  • Undergo on-the-job training with a Regional Communications Training Officer and gradually assume independent call taking duties.
  • Perform related duties as directed, including handling emergency and non-emergency communications.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (evaluation of foreign diplomas may be required).
  • At least one (1) year of documented experience or training in clerical work, data entry, public contact, or customer service.
  • Experience in a police/fire rescue emergency dispatch center, police aide work, explorer program, or college coursework in criminal justice, telecommunications, or a related field is preferred.
  • Possession of or pursuing a Department of Health Telecommunicator Certification is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered if well documented.
  • Must successfully complete mandatory in-house training, radio training on a primary dispatch group, and acquire active certifications including FCIC/NCIC Terminal Access, Crisis Intervention, IAED Emergency Dispatch, APCO certifications, CPR, and ICS series certifications.
