Job Description

Position Overview

In this role, you will assist physicians in performing endoscopic procedures under the direction of a physician/registered nurse, reprocess endoscopic instruments, and perform clerical/receptionist functions as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Displays skill and treatments specific to the clinical area as identified in the unit-specific skills checklist.
  • Carries out clerical duties (i.e., ordering of supplies, appropriate routing of laboratory specimens, patient log, and transport arrangements).
  • Keeps the Endoworks documentation system up to date during the shift.
  • Understands and utilizes the Epic/Navicare schedule.
  • Maintains patient log documentation.
  • Notifies appropriate physicians and departments concerning admissions, transfers, and discharges in Endoscopy as needed.
  • Functions as a receptionist by answering telephones and greeting patients, families, and members of the health team.
  • Assists in directing the flow of traffic on the unit.
  • Completes daily unit assignments within the appropriate time frame.
  • Demonstrates quality nursing care based on standards and policies, as evidenced through performance improvement monitoring tools (e.g., chart audits, occurrence reports, patient rounds, and observation).
  • Shows knowledge of unit-based performance improvement studies and identifies unit indicators.
  • Documents accurately in accordance with Penn Medicine standards.
  • Practices in accordance with the Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skill to provide care/service based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to the age of the patients/customers served.
  • Provides individualized, planned, and appropriate care/service that supports patients’ care, treatment, rehabilitation goals, and/or specific needs.
  • Participates in and supports departmental and organizational efforts to design, measure, assess, and improve performance.
  • Understands the individual’s role in the delivery of care/service within the organization.
  • Adheres to appropriate safety and infection control techniques as well as hospital policy.
  • Carries out unit-specific duties and other tasks as directed by the nurse manager.
  • Practices principles of delegation.
  • Facilitates and demonstrates team-building.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the work area.
  • Notifies the charge nurse when leaving the unit.
  • Assists with the orientation of personnel to equipment function, cleaning/disinfection, stocking of rooms and carts, and assistance during procedures.
  • Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
  • Orders supplies appropriately to meet the needs of the unit.
  • Maintains purchase order and requisition files.
  • Keeps up-to-date with advances in Navicare and Endoworks.
  • Acts as a Navicare and Endoworks resource for other staff members.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) (Required)
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Previous hospital experience as an OR technician, nursing assistant, or comparable experience
