Position Overview
Austin Commercial, a 100% employee-owned leader in commercial construction, is seeking a Project Controls Engineer II to join our Houston, Texas Division. In this role, you will assist project managers with procurement, expediting construction materials, and support the Estimating department with bid preparation when not assigned to a project. Location: Houston, Texas.
Key Responsibilities
- Notifies subcontractors of commencement dates; solicits delivery schedules from suppliers; expedites deliveries to avoid costly construction delays.
- Participates in detailed estimating of cost and construction time for proposed changes; may engage in direct negotiations with owners regarding change orders; ensures that contract plans and the master schedule are updated properly.
- Prepares submittal schedules to meet construction timelines and coordinates submissions with subcontractors; assumes overall responsibility for submittals including verification of accuracy, handling transmittals, and maintaining logs; expeditiously resolves delays by following up on submittals.
- Prepares and/or oversees various project reports such as material logs, submittal logs, RFI logs, drawing logs, and long-lead item logs as required by owners and company procedures.
- Assists the project manager in preparing subcontracts and resolving issues related to interpretation or execution; alerts the project manager to unresolved issues and proposes alternative solutions.
- Assists in the verification of monthly subcontractor payment requests.
- May help in locating suppliers for building materials; reviews invoices to verify quantity, quality, and pricing for construction materials.
- Responds to RFIs from owners and subcontractors; prepares RFIs for the project architect or structural engineer as needed and ensures timely distribution of the responses.
- Assists in compiling close-out documents, including as-built drawings, guarantees, warranties, service manuals, and other related materials; may prepare warranty documentation for inclusion in the close-out package.
- Participates in jobsite safety initiatives as outlined in the company’s Safety & Health Manual.
- When not assigned to a project, supports the Estimating department with detailed cost estimates, value engineering activities, and pricing of alternative procedures while interacting with various construction professionals.
Required Qualifications
- Education: B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience Required: 2 years’ work experience in the construction industry.
- Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training (which may be obtained within the first year of employment).
- Experience with RFIs, submittals, and punch-list management.
