Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer Technician
Job Description
Fluid Dynamics Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a competent Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team. This role plays a critical part in the design, analysis, and optimization of airflow measurement systems, test stands, and related mechanical/thermal subsystems. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, compressible flow, and instrumentation, and can translate theoretical principles into practical solutions for high-accuracy airflow equipment. The Engineer will collaborate with other team members—including electronics, software, and manufacturing—to ensure our products meet stringent performance, accuracy, and reliability requirements. This position requires strong analytical ability, hands-on testing skills, and the ability to clearly document and communicate engineering findings.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed analysis of incompressible and compressible flows for nozzles, orifice plates, plenums, and blowers.
- Develop and refine mass flow, pressure loss, Reynolds number, choked flow, and boundary layer models to support product design.
- Evaluate the impact of real-world variables (temperature, humidity, barometric pressure) on airflow measurement accuracy.
- Support the design of airflow test stands, plenum systems, and critical-flow nozzles.
- Optimize flow paths, diffuser geometries, and measurement locations to maximize stability and reduce noise/pulsation.
- Assist with selection and integration of transducers, thermistors, flow elements, and sensing hardware based on application requirements.
- Contribute to the development of new products, accessories, and airflow measurement techniques.
- Develop and execute test plans for airflow rigs, nozzles, blowers, and sensors.
- Analyze test data to validate models and ensure compliance with internal/external specifications (e.g., ANSI, ISO, NIST traceability).
- Support creation of uncertainty budgets and documentation for calibration procedures.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, or thermal issues affecting system performance.
- Work closely with electrical/software engineers to improve measurement algorithms, filtering, and PID control of airflow systems.
- Provide engineering input during manufacturing, assembly, and quality control.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineering leadership, technicians, and customers.
- Produce detailed engineering reports, drawings, specifications, and troubleshooting guides.
- Contribute to internal manuals, training materials, and fluid-dynamics-related knowledge databases.
- Ensure all work adheres to industry standards and internal quality procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors or associates degree in Mechanical or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, including:
- Compressible and incompressible flow
- Choked/sonic flow
- Ability to analyze large datasets, interpret measurements, and draw clear engineering conclusions.
- Proficiency in creating engineering documentation, schematics, and specifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors or associates degree in Mechanical or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Experience with airflow test stands, mass-airflow measurement, or HVAC/industrial flow equipment.
- Familiarity with:
- Sonic nozzles and critical-flow venturis
- Orifice plates and flow coefficients
- Pressure transducers, thermistors, and calibration processes
- PID control systems and signal filtering
- Hands-on experience with lab testing, instrumentation setup, and data acquisition.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or R&D environment.
Benefits: Why Join Our Team
- Work on advanced airflow measurement machines used in aerospace, energy, and high-precision industries.
- Contribute to cutting-edge engineering solutions combining mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines.
- Collaborate with a passionate, innovative engineering team in a small but growing company.
