Position Overview
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories, located on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland, with 800+ employees. We are hiring a skilled Cloud Data Engineer I to join our Catalog Science Branch in the Data Management Division (DMD) to help advance our state-of-the-art astronomical data archive – the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). MAST is the public data archive for more than 20 missions spanning over 30 years, including Hubble, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Kepler, GALEX, TESS and the future Nancy Grace Roman mission.
This position supports hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the local market (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV) and must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents to meet ITAR requirements. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining cloud-based data systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, construct, install, test, and maintain highly scalable cloud-based data management systems
- Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines
- Work with cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) to manage data storage and processing systems and implement best practices for cloud sources optimization
- Collaborate with application engineers, archive scientists, architects, as well as storage and networking engineering teams for architectural design and implementation strategy
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Undergraduate with 3+ years of experience in cloud development
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and SQL
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon Web Services) and related applications/tools
- Experience with developing, building, and deploying scalable data pipelines
- Familiarity with big data tools and frameworks
- Familiarity with cloud data storage and data access strategies
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills

- Compensation: Commensurate with education and experience. Salary range is $93k to $105k.
