The Department Administrator for the Ophthalmology Department is responsible for budget planning, fiscal and resource management, human resource utilization, and coordinating activities with various entities to ensure our strategic goals are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management of the department’s day-to-day administration and may represent the Chair in various meetings and venues.
  • Supports and partners with the Chief Operating Officer for Academic Affairs on School of Medicine and Health System initiatives.
  • Participates in strategic planning to align departmental and UTSW goals, enhancing market growth and revenue while containing costs.
  • Manages program development, conducts operational analyses, implements new procedures, and oversees office and research space assignments.
  • Advises on fiscal matters, monitors budgets, prepares financial reports, and ensures reliable revenue and expenditure management.
  • Oversees human resource activities including recruitment, salary analysis, employee development, performance evaluations, and related administrative functions.
  • Creates business plans and models, proposing changes for funding lines, research activities, clinical programs, and faculty compensation.
  • Directs the administration of the research enterprise, including grant administration and support for major research proposals.
  • Oversees the promotion, tenure, and faculty appointment process in partnership with the School of Medicine Dean’s Office.
  • Develops programs and performance standards to continually measure and improve safety, service, and quality.
  • May direct and manage the department's billing and revenue cycle operations.
  • Provides administrative direction for educational programs under the supervision of the Chair and Residency Director.
  • Guides the research support function, ensuring compliance with institutional guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Represents the Chair in his absence on administrative and fiscal matters and consistently attends meetings on behalf of the department.
  • Sets a tone of service excellence by focusing on data-based decision-making and collaboration.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with organizational peers, serves on committees, and ensures timely completion of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a related field.
  • 6 years of directly related experience, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory/management role.
  • Demonstrated ability in team building, leadership, strong financial and analytical skills, effective prioritization, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business or Healthcare Administration.
  • 8 years of directly related experience with at least four (4) years in a supervisory/management capacity.
