Job Description
Position Overview
The Process & Manufacturing Engineer will serve as the primary technical resource for process engineering and quality management at Aurora's manufacturing facility. This role combines hands-on process engineering with quality leadership responsibilities, ensuring optimal production efficiency while maintaining Aurora's quality standards. The engineer will support equipment optimization, process improvement, and quality systems while building expertise in flexible PVC compounding operations. This position offers growth potential to support additional facilities as the individual develops experience and demonstrates leadership capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary process engineer and quality lead for the assigned manufacturing facility
- Monitor and optimize daily production processes for flexible PVC compounding operations
- Implement and maintain quality control systems and testing procedures
- Lead quality complaint investigations and corrective action implementations
- Ensure compliance with Aurora's quality standards and regulatory requirements
- Optimize compounding processes for maximum efficiency, quality, and material consistency
- Develop and execute Design of Experiments (DOEs) to improve process parameters
- Establish and maintain Statistical Process Control (SPC) systems
- Troubleshoot process issues and implement sustainable solutions
- Support production scale-up activities and process improvements
- Provide technical support for PVC compounding equipment operation and maintenance
- Engage in the installation and commissioning of equipment as part of assigned projects
- Collaborate with maintenance teams on preventive maintenance programs
- Support equipment troubleshooting and optimization initiatives
- Ensure proper integration of equipment modifications with existing operations
- Establish and maintain comprehensive quality control protocols
- Develop and update standard operating procedures and work instructions
- Conduct root cause analysis for quality and process deviations
- Manage quality metrics and reporting systems
- Interface with customers on technical and quality requirements
- Develop and maintain process documentation, including SOPs and troubleshooting guides
- Create process control plans (PCPs) and failure mode effect analysis (FMEAs)
- Train production operators on process parameters and quality requirements
- Maintain technical records and ensure compliance with documentation standards
- Support knowledge transfer activities as needed
- Identify and implement process improvement opportunities
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to maximize efficiency and minimize waste
- Support new product development and customer trials
- Participate in cross-functional improvement teams
- Develop technical expertise in flexible PVC applications and formulations
- Provide technical support for customer applications and requirements
- Support sales team with technical specifications and capabilities
- Participate in customer audits and technical discussions
- Contribute to new business development through technical expertise
- Interface with Aurora's technical centers for advanced development projects
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field
- Experience Required: 3-5 years in polymer processing, compounding, or related manufacturing operations, with preference for PVC or thermoplastic experience
- Technical Skills: Experience with polymer processing equipment (mixers, extruders, conveying systems)
- Knowledge of process control systems and basic automation
- Understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and quality systems
- Basic project management and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Personal Attributes: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry Experience: Experience with flexible PVC compounds or thermoplastic applications (automotive, building products, wire & cable)
- Quality Experience: Knowledge of ISO standards, APQP, or other quality management systems
- Technical Skills: Experience with DOE, FMEA, or other process improvement tools
- Software Skills: Proficiency with statistical software, process control systems, or CAD programs
- Certifications: Six Sigma, quality certifications, or process improvement training
