Job Description
Position Overview
Designer I Top Candidate Profile (WANT): Certified Solid Works; Excellent communication skills; Strong organizational skills; Eager and motivated to learn.
Under supervision—and with room for independent contribution—the Designer I works from rough engineering notes, drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to create complex mechanical designs and CAD models.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Modeling: Design or modify existing designs to improve products or support manufacturing operations; Create complex mechanical designs and CAD models from rough engineering inputs; Develop CAD models of complex assemblies, detailed parts, devices, and mechanisms; Determine design characteristics such as packaging, panel/control CAD models, functional configuration, and key structural elements.
- Technical Analysis & Research: Investigate design factors including manufacturability, material availability, tooling, interchangeability, replaceability, and serviceability; Gather and analyze design information; conduct research using handbook data and knowledge of catalog/standard components.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with other departments impacted by design development; Support Engineering Services Document Control with CAD documentation updates related to Change Requests.
- Compliance & Documentation: Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions; Maintain compliance with quality processes and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Experience Required: 1–2 years of experience with an AA Technical Certificate, Mechanical Drafting & Design Certificate, or similar.
- Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge in specialized design functions; strong understanding of complex technical concepts and product/system fundamentals; working knowledge of related engineering disciplines.
- Cognitive Skills: Ability to perform complex or specialized technical assignments independently; capable of designing, developing, or modifying equipment, materials, systems, or products; exercises judgment, initiative, creativity, and leadership in troubleshooting and recommending improvements.
- Supervision: Works with minimal supervision; may determine methods and procedures on new assignments; may provide guidance to other support personnel.
- Impact of Errors: Errors are difficult to detect and may require significant resources to resolve.
- Contacts: Frequent interaction with external organizations and key internal stakeholders; requires strong communication, tact, persuasion, and negotiation skills.
