Position Overview
The Aerospace Component Manufacturing - Tooling Design Engineer at PPG in Sylmar, CA supports the design and development of tooling solutions to sustain production, improve cycle times, and assist in new product introduction. This role, centered on 3D CAD design and modeling in SOLIDWORKS, requires managing multiple designs including jigs, fixtures, molds, and more while ensuring document and data control. Working on-site, the successful candidate will make an immediate impact within the Tooling/Engineering group.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and tooling components in SOLIDWORKS, including jigs, fixtures, inspection tooling, and forming molds.
- Support multiple design projects simultaneously, adapting to shifting priorities and variable workflow requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and serve as a technical resource for upstream process reviews and tooling requirements.
- Assist in downstream activities such as quality inspection tooling, tool validation, and production buy‑off.
- Maintain accurate document control, versioning, and engineering data management for all design packages.
- Participate in design reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and process evaluations to fuel continuous improvement.
- Apply design principles to optimize tooling for ergonomics, efficiency, and process measurement capabilities.
- Support senior engineers in mentoring technicians and implementing best practices in CAD and tooling design.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in tooling, manufacturing engineering, or related technical/design roles.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
- Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS CAD software for assemblies and 3D modeling.
- Experience in designing fixtures, molds, jigs, and tooling components for both hard tooling (CNC, machining, welding) and soft tooling (fiberglass, carbon fiber, resin, 3D printing).
- Eligibility limited to U.S. Citizens, Green Card holders, and political asylees or refugees.

- Compensation: The base salary range for this position is $90,000 to $107,000 annually, dictated by relevant experience and departmental pay equity.
