Job Description

Position Overview

The Perfusionist AMC reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine (NM) while adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards. Please note, The Perfusionist NHN meets the professional exemption under FLSA but works an irregular schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate cardiopulmonary bypass circuit in accordance with NM, AMSECT, and manufacturer guidelines
  • Monitor oxygenator and adjust gas flow as needed
  • Operate centrifugal and roller pumps to maintain adequate cardiac output
  • Monitor blood temperature, O₂, CO₂, pH, venous saturations, and adjust as needed
  • Monitor blood electrolytes including potassium, sodium, and calcium
  • Manage heparin administration during bypass
  • Cool and rewarm patients as directed by the surgeon
  • Chart patients’ vital parameters on the perfusion record at regular intervals
  • Troubleshoot unusual occurrences or deviations from NM or AMSECT guidelines and communicate issues to the surgeon and anesthesiologist
  • Complete annual competency assessments on all perfusion equipment and guidelines
  • Demonstrate understanding and proper use of all perfusion equipment and NM/AMSECT guidelines
  • Set up and operate the cell salvaging system throughout the medical center
  • Set up and operate various ventricular assist devices (HVAD, HMII, HMIII, Impella, TandemHeart) and transport VADs to procedural areas
  • Provide call coverage on a rotating basis with colleagues
  • Set up and operate the ECMO circuit and initiate support anywhere in the medical center
  • Educate and explain perfusion responsibilities to medical staff, residents, medical students, and nursing staff
  • Assist medical personnel in the operating room to ensure optimal patient care
  • Clean and restock perfusion equipment as necessary
  • Check perfusion equipment for proper operation
  • Set up and operate the HIPEC system
  • Set up and operate Veno-venous support systems

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited perfusion school
  • CCP certification
  • Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Licensed Perfusionist
  • BLS Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree
