Job Description
Position Overview
Hawaiian Electric is seeking a Customer Energy Resources (CER) Program Engineer to support customer‑sited renewable energy programs. In this role you will serve as a primary resource for IT infrastructure required to implement and support Demand Response (DR) and Distributed Energy Programs (DER) – key components of CER initiatives. You will work closely with aggregators, service providers, Program Managers, and customers. The position is based in Honolulu, Oahu. Compensation: $87,400.00 – $ based on skills and qualifications. Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a resource for the IT infrastructure required to implement and support DR and DER programs, acting as the primary interface with aggregators and service providers for DERMS integration support and maintenance.
- Manage, implement, test, and monitor CER applications and infrastructure (e.g., DERMS, CBRE, CIT), including integration with third parties and customer field devices.
- Conduct technical studies, evaluations, planning, and engineering support in the development of CER programs.
- Evaluate technical pilot opportunities, manage pilots, and develop performance metrics using engineering models, databases, and simulation tools.
- Administer contracts with engineering consultants and vendors, oversee outside contractors, and prepare RFPs for consultant services.
- Support regulatory filings related to CER programs and operations, including rate cases.
- Provide consultation services and perform site/field surveys for residential, commercial, and industrial customers by making on‑site visits to collect data.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Engineering or Computer Science degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) from an ABET‑accredited institution; or equivalent utility grid operations experience.
- Detailed knowledge of engineering principles applicable to utility/DR/DER IT infrastructure, including control systems, data acquisition, interval meters, and remote communications.
- Working knowledge of utility operations, business systems, and DR/DER programs; proficiency with standard software (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Must be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.
- Proven skills in research, planning, organization, report writing, and creative problem-solving.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- At least five years of engineering experience or equivalent education and training, with hands‑on project management experience.
