Position Overview
HDR Engineering is currently seeking an Electrical Distribution Project Engineer to join our nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare all technical aspects and deliverables associated with the conceptual and detailed design of overhead and underground electric power distribution systems, including system planning, lighting design, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Coordinate the preparation of construction packages for distribution lines including plan and profile drawings, structure assemblies and details, stringing charts, staking tables, and bills of material.
- Assign tasks and provide guidance to junior team members while coordinating quality control reviews for work performed by EITs and/or designers.
- Identify and implement learning opportunities for team members through methods such as job shadowing, project task assignments, and group knowledge sharing sessions.
- Perform quality control reviews of projects from other teams as needed.
- Provide engineering input on specific design issues and questions, and conduct analyses to develop design options.
- Assist with the preparation of cost estimates or specifications.
- Attend client stakeholder meetings and lead design reviews.
- Provide input to the development of project manhour estimates and task schedules.
- Effectively manage multiple tasks across projects, ensuring adherence to schedules and budgets.
- Perform site visits during design, construction, and as-built phases, including field reviews and construction observation.
- Work independently on:
- electrical clearance calculations,
- lighting photometric calculations,
- electrical load calculations,
- short circuit, overcurrent coordination, and arc flash studies.
- Collaborate with team members on technical report writing.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).
- A commitment to being an active participant in an employee-owned culture.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years of experience in distribution planning, modeling, coordination, and line design.
- Experience performing structural analysis, plan and profile preparation, line optimization, and preparing specifications and drawings for overhead and underground projects.
- Proficiency in PLS-CADD and related design software.
- At least 4 years of experience in electrical distribution system analysis and design, including lighting design, field staking, joint-use field review, and knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), with familiarity in electrical analysis software (e.g., CYMCAP, ETAP, Polywater Pull Planner).
- Experience with design tools for pole loading analysis (e.g., O-calc, SpidaCalc, Pole Foreman).
- Experience using CAD software packages for electrical distribution (e.g., PLS-CADD, MicroStation, AutoCAD, ArcGIS).
- Experience in electrical distribution modeling and planning, development of construction work plans, and long-range project planning.
- Strong client relationship skills.
