Job Description
Position Overview
The East Hampton Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. This role is a patrol police work position charged with the protection of life and property, prevention, detection and investigation of crime, and maintaining law and order. Officers work independently under varying conditions and are expected to exercise sound judgment while upholding the highest legal and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or in a patrol car while continuously monitoring business establishments and private residences for any suspicious activity.
- Enforce motor vehicle laws, criminal statutes, and local ordinances, and perform parking and traffic control duties.
- Assist stranded motorists, injured or ill persons, and escort payroll deliveries and tax deposits.
- Investigate reports regarding wanted or missing persons, property, and accidents; conduct arrests, fingerprinting, and processing of suspects along with preparing detailed written reports.
- Testify in court, provide evidence, and engage with the public through talks and meetings as required.
- Respond to medical emergencies and perform related clerical duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). Applicants with an Associate Degree or its credit hour equivalency are encouraged, particularly if accompanied by four years of active military experience or if already a certified police officer in Connecticut.
- Must maintain a Valid Connecticut Driver’s License and a clean driving history without any major violations in the past three years or suspensions/revocations in the past five years.
- Be a U.S. citizen – note that there is no residency requirement per the current Police Union Contract.
- Agree to and successfully complete all conditions regarding the physical examination, Drug Testing (including submission of a Drug Testing Supplement), Non-Smoking Requirement (with at least six months abstinence), and Body Art Acknowledgement.
- Must meet stringent character criteria with a thorough background investigation; any omissions or falsifications in the application will lead to immediate disqualification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Possession of an Associate Degree or credit hour equivalency from an accredited college/university with four years of active military experience, or current Connecticut police certification.
