Job Description
Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer role, based in Detroit, MI, is critical to designing and overseeing building mechanical systems. This position involves providing technical leadership, managing project development, and ensuring design compliance with performance, code, budget, and schedule requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Building Mechanical Systems Design: Lead the design of systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, chilled water, hydronic systems, compressed air, natural gas, plumbing, and energy conservation initiatives. Provide technical oversight to ensure designs meet performance and compliance standards.
- Technical Leadership & Innovation: Implement new technologies and methodologies to enhance design efficiency; prepare and review technical reports and engineering documentation.
- Client & Contractor Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for clients and contractors, leading meetings, design presentations, and coordination sessions.
- Project & Scope Development: Develop project scopes, support proposals including fee development, and assist in planning and resource allocation.
- Construction Support & Administration: Oversee shop drawing reviews, manage RFIs, and ensure compliance with mechanical plans during construction, including commissioning and project close-out.
- Cost Estimating & Value Engineering: Lead cost estimating efforts and identify value engineering opportunities to optimize project costs.
- Mentorship & Team Support: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technologists in a collaborative environment.
- Travel: Frequent domestic travel and occasional international travel as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; P.E designation in Michigan is required.
- Minimum 7-10 years of mechanical design experience in building systems with a solid understanding of consulting engineering project phases.
- Advanced knowledge of local and national codes and standards (e.g., OBC, NBC, ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office with strong analytical, project management, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BIM 360, advanced load calculation software (HAP, Trace), and facilities operations and maintenance is a plus.
