Job Description
Position Overview
The Emergency Room Tech position at UT Southwestern is a critical role within the Emergency Department, working 36 hours per week on a 3p-3a Shift. In this role, you will support patient care through accurate collection of vital data, execution of clinical procedures, and effective collaboration with nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and record patient data including intake/output, vital signs, and notify the nurse of any abnormal values.
- Perform EKGs, phlebotomy, and point-of-care testing with accurate and timely documentation.
- Respond promptly to patient requests, ensuring comfort, hygiene, and clear communication.
- Maintain an adequate stock of supplies and ensure proper functioning of equipment.
- Assist with safe patient transfers and transports in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Support the orientation of new staff and students to promote a collaborative work environment.
- Utilize downtime effectively to assist team members and enhance patient care.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years experience as a certified nursing assistant, patient care technician, medical office assistant, or EMT/EMT-I (or completion of the first semester of nursing clinicals). Must be proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
- Demonstrated competency in performing EKGs (or ability to achieve competency within 30 days) and successful completion of IV training with competency demonstrated within 60 days. Experience with phlebotomy is required.
- Licenses/Certifications: BLS certification from an accredited program; ACPE-IV Sterile Compounding (IV) Certification within 60 days; Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Certification within 180 days; EMT certification is optional but must be kept current if held.
