Position Overview

Xcel Energy is seeking a seasoned engineer with extensive technical expertise to serve as a senior-level technical advisor and consultant. In this role, you will carry out complex assignments, develop innovative techniques and procedures, and represent the organization as a prime technical contact on major projects. You may be assigned to lead multiple projects of moderate to large size and guide teams of engineers, technicians, and support staff.
Salary: Senior Engineer Level: $94,600 - $126,134; Principal Engineer Level: $109,300 - $152,766
Key Responsibilities
- Applies extensive technical expertise and demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of related disciplines by leading projects of moderate to large size, scope, and complexity.
- Develops new or improved techniques, procedures, and standards while supporting the creation of technical documentation such as designs, testing protocols, calculations, and reports.
- Provides field engineering oversight and direction for activities including support, testing, installation, inspections, and commissioning, while exercising significant independence.
- Coordinates and leads multiple projects or portions of projects – from research and design to equipment selection, procurement, installation, and commissioning – and may oversee higher-level engineers or supervisors.
- Serves as the prime technical contact during bid evaluations by participating in the preparation of bid documents and technical evaluations of proposals.
- Resolves complex technical and business issues with internal and external stakeholders using all formats of communication.
- Assigns tasks to and provides mentoring for engineers, technicians, and other support staff, while continuously developing personal technical skills and competencies.
- Leads activities such as budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management in support of engineering projects.
Required Qualifications
- Required bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum; civil, mechanical, or structural engineering degrees preferred.
- For the Senior Engineer level: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience with EIT/FE required, or 7+ years without EIT/FE.
- For the Principal Engineer level: 9+ years of relevant engineering experience with Professional Engineer (PE) registration required, or 15+ years without PE.
- Ability to demonstrate unique technical skills and core competencies that are documented by the organization.
- For the Senior Engineer level, a preferred PE registration may be required depending on business need.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in gas transmission and/or distribution.
- Strong understanding of 49 CFR §192.
- Experience working with third party contractors and consultants.
- Experience with EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) project execution.
