Field Tech – Rental

Position Overview

At Thompson Machinery – the trusted Caterpillar dealer for Middle and West Tennessee and North Mississippi – our Rental Field Service Technicians power progress by providing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and service for Cat Rental Store equipment including Caterpillar, JLG, and Genie scissor and boom lifts, among others. Working independently from a company-provided field service truck, you will serve customers at various locations and service shops.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret technical instructions, safety manuals, service manuals, and company policies.
• Monitor and maintain proper fluid levels in equipment.
• Notify customers promptly about status, availability, or urgent concerns.
• Operate equipment after service to confirm repairs and check for leaks.
• Research and order parts for customer or company equipment.
• Test equipment after repairs to ensure the problem has been corrected.

Required Qualifications

• Field Service Technician training and/or equipment service and maintenance training through accredited technical schools, equipment dealerships, or manufacturer training preferred; high school diploma required.
• Three (3) or more years’ experience with rental equipment repairs.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and on-call hours; must work independently in remote locations.
• Strong professionalism, integrity, adaptability, and a keen customer service focus.
• A sense of urgency, self-initiative, and personal drive for success.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Valid state driver’s license with a current DOT medical card as required for operating service trucks and towing.
• Basic set of industrial tools (e.g., industrial hand tools, air tools, torque wrenches, multimeters).
• Willingness to travel within the assigned region and work overtime, weekends, holidays, with occasional overnight travel.
