Position Overview
Job Title: Building Engineer/First Class Refrigeration Operator
Department: Building Operations
Reports To: Director, Building Operations and Manager, Building Operations
Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union
Remote Work Eligibility: Museum-Based
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 3:00pm-11:00pm
Under the guidance of the Director, Building Operations and the Manager, Building Operations, the Building Engineer protects the DIA’s valuable art collection and promotes staff and visitor comfort and safety by ensuring building systems perform to design and by monitoring the museum environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual inspections of all Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of all mechanical equipment; undertake repairs for pumps, motors, fans, steam traps, regulating devices, and HVAC controls to ensure optimal operation of building systems.
- Read, interpret, and effectively communicate information from blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and manuals.
- Record maintenance and operations activities in the engineer logbook.
- Monitor water treatment for cooling towers, re-heat loops, and chiller water loops.
- Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field required; two (2) years of training and experience resulting in HVAC Certification and three (3) years of relevant work experience.
- City of Detroit First-Class Refrigeration Operator’s license and EPA certification are required.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining HVAC equipment, including reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and remote work technology such as Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to identify challenges, engage others in resolution, and respond calmly in emergency situations.
- Capability to work regular weekend, evening, and holiday hours while prioritizing and completing multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain professional, productive teamwork.
