Job Description

Position Overview

The Quality Control Lab Technician will perform quality control testing and reporting duties in the concrete and concrete aggregates testing laboratory.

Compensation: $28.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of stripping, curing, capping, and compression testing in the concrete and concrete aggregates testing lab.
  • Report concrete cylinder strength test results according to ACI standards.
  • Process aggregate field test samples and reduce to the appropriate testing size.
  • Conduct tests including temperature, slump, density, air content, cylinders, gradation tests on rock and sand, durability, moisture, cleanliness value, #200 wash, sand equivalency, specific gravities, and absorptions.
  • Enter test results daily into a computer database and distribute reports to appropriate individuals.
  • Gather materials at production plants for concrete trial batch tests, accurately weigh materials, and set up equipment for trial testing.
  • Conduct scheduled calibrations on test equipment per the calibration schedule.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area and office equipment.
  • Troubleshoot job problems and handle job complaints regarding aggregates and concrete quality.
  • Analyze aggregate and strength reports to identify trends.
  • Work directly with suppliers, vendors, and internal customers as necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • DOT Soils and Aggregate Certification.
  • ACI Strength Testing Certification and ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1.
  • Obtain and maintain ACI Concrete Strength Testing certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Obtain and maintain DOT Soil and Aggregate and/or ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1 certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Capable of performing motions such as climbing, bending, squatting, lifting, sitting, stretching, vibration, twisting, pushing/pulling controls, and working on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Able to work in extreme hot or cold weather and in wet environments.
  • Must be flexible with work hours and available for overtime as needed.
  • Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and follow all CalPortland Safety Policies; ANSI-approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English and work cooperatively with others.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the company.
  • May be required to perform Field Technician duties based on business needs.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite and SAP software.

Conditions of Employment: Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance along with ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
