Job Description

Position Overview

The Engineer I performs engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller, less complex projects. These projects require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the incumbent will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, perform detailed engineering reviews of plans for compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Employ conventional engineering practices to resolve moderately complex issues such as conflicting design requirements, material standards, or coordination with other disciplines.
  • Draft technically accurate and timely reports and responses to client communications for review.
  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly reports and billing for all work performed.
  • Communicate workload status to ensure client needs are met.
  • Propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices as needed.
  • Recommend new approaches to problems encountered and suggest changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
  • Collaborate directly with clients to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Operate effectively as a team member and, once trained, work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements following the required training.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or a related discipline. An M.S. degree may be preferred.
  • For recent graduates: Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software and exposure to the Finite Element Method (through coursework or supervised research).
  • For experienced engineers: For Hull specialties – either seven (7) years or more of related engineering experience or a professional/chartered engineer license with at least four (4) years of relevant experience; for Machinery specialties – either seven (7) years or more of related experience or a seagoing engineering license/professional license with four (4) years or more.
  • Strong knowledge of related technical disciplines with the ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent command of the English language with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, coupled with the initiative to function autonomously when required.
  • Working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
